Fun, Friendship and Finding Community at Edgehill

Judy Schedler shares her gift for creating moments of joy and togetherness.

Thoughtful, organized and always centered on connection, resident Judy Schedler’s philosophy reflects not only her approach to planning events like Edgehill’s beloved Trivia Challenge, but also what she appreciates about life at Edgehill: “Take care of the details, provide time for people to mingle, get to know each other on a deeper level and enjoy the people you are with,” she advises.

Finding a Home at Edgehill

After her husband passed, Judy Schedler began spending her winters with her son’s family in Dallas, TX, living in a cozy apartment over the garage that had everything she needed. She cherished time with her grandchildren, enjoyed meals with family and made new friends. Each spring, returning to her large, quiet Greenwich home made her realize she was using only a small portion of the space. “I loved my home,” she says, “but I did not need all that house just for myself.”

During this period, Judy learned about continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) and the concept of Lifecare, a lifestyle that blends Independent Living with the security of a continuum of care. Judy immediately recognized that this approach was exactly what she wanted and was encouraged by her son to find a community near Greenwich. That search led her to Edgehill, close to the heart of her beloved hometown. “It was a no-brainer,” Judy recalls.

Judy moved to Edgehill at age 73 and quickly embraced life on campus. “It is just a different address,” she explains. “Less to worry about with home-maintenance included, and all the connections, friendships and activities I love are here.” She remains active in the greater Greenwich community, serving on local boards and volunteering, while fully enjoying Edgehill’s lifestyle and social offerings.

Sharing Experiences: Event Planning in the Greenwich Community

Even after moving to Edgehill, Judy continues to plan events in the broader Greenwich community. One of Judy’s favorite initiatives is the ‘Go Girls’, a long-standing group for single women with no children at home.

Over the years, she has built a robust distribution list, sharing invitations to dinners, concerts and outings. “I always try to include a meal,” she says. “It is about enjoying the people you are with and connecting on a deeper level.” She brings her passion for community connection to all Edgehill residents, helping to plan some of the most beloved events of the year.

Trivia Challenge: Fun, Community and Friendly Competition

A highlight of life at Edgehill is the annual Trivia Challenge, now in its fifth year. As part of a small committee, Judy organizes the event alongside Lifestyle Director Sandi Kornblum. Each of the three teams features four residents from a single floor, representing all three wings. The audience, pom-poms in hand, fills the room by floor, their cheers and excitement spilling into the next room, creating a lively, contagious energy that sets the stage for the fun ahead.

Questions cover a wide range of topics, including sports, literature, history, geography, science, plants and animals. The first team to reach thirty points wins, and the grand prize is a fabulous cocktail party for the entire winning floor, making it one of the most anticipated and well-attended events of the year.

Living Fully and Giving Back

For Judy, Edgehill is not just a place to live, it is a continuation of a life filled with friendships, purpose and joy. “The community here shares my vision of spending time together, connecting and truly enjoying each other’s company,” she says.
